what is an ally?

Simply stated, an ally is a person who is not gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender but who shows support for their LGBTQ neighbors and promotes equality for every person.

Baby Steps for New Friends and Allies
1) Listen and be open-minded.

2) Seek books and resources to learn more about people who are different than you.

3) Seek opportunities to interact with people from minority groups in healthy ways, such as community groups, social or educational events, and recreation.

4) Anti-LGBT (or racist, or anti-Muslim, or anti-minority) jokes or comments are harmful. Don’t say them, and if you hear others saying such things, don’t go along with it. Speak up and say the comments are offensive.

5) Confront your own biases and prejudices. Are you holding onto unhelpful or harmful perspectives?

6) Bear witness to and defend against discrimination. If you see someone being discriminated against, safely intervene if possible. Film or document acts of discrimination and report them to appropriate authorities.

7) If you see a people group being misrepresented, use your voice to help set the record straight.
